Porto Novo, Jul 30 (Inforpress) – The Minister of Agriculture and Environment Gilberto Silva admitted Sunday in Santo Antão that the forest in East Plateau, devastated by a large fire on Friday, will take more than five years of work to its recovery.
The latest evaluation points to an area of 200 hectares, equivalent to 200 football fields, representing “a great damage” that will take more than five years to be recovered, according to the Minister of Agriculture and Environment, at the begining of a 4-day visit to Santo Antão.
“We are talking about 200 hectares, which represent 13% of the entire forest area. We will take more than five years of work to recover this forest”, noted the official, who, in addition to replanting, will still need to recover the anti-erosive devices damaged by the flames, which representes “huge financial resources”.
Also from an environmental point of view, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment will work to recover the 25 species of endemic plants destroyed by the fire, whose causes will be determined by the competent authorities, he added.
