Praia, Aug 21 (Inforpress) – The Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Gilberto Silva, confirmed today the FAO support with the availability of experts to help Cabo Verde to combat the armyworm pest.
Gilberto Silva, who was speaking to press on the sidelines of the official presentation ceremony of the “Adapting Family Farming to Climate Change Project”, said that FAO experts will help the country to promote concrete measures to combat this pest.
“It’s a pest that spanned Africa just over two years ago, was introduced from the Americas, most likely from Latin America. It will be an integrated fight because we are not going to fight the pest with pesticides, “he said.
For this fight, he explained, will find natural enemies to combat this pest , do the multiplication and then make the fight.
The ruler, who said that it is not yet possible to speak on damage in terms of agriculture, is of the opinion that if the pest is not controlled now, the situation can could be worse, since it is a pest that uses more than eighty agricultural products for survive.
