Praia, Aug 24 (Inforpress) – A Brazilian mission is in the City of Praia to teach a course on rainwater abstraction, storage and utilization through underground dam technology, which started today at the National Hydroponic Center in Achada São Filipe.
The Brazilian mission, which will be in the country until Wednesday, 5th, are composode by technicians from EMBRAPA Solos and the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC).
According to the promoters of the initiative, the focus is to strengthen the capacity of national technicians in the selection and construction of underground dams, management and soil conservation, as well as to promote the exchange between Brazil and Cabo Verde, with a view to the sustainable development of agriculture.
During the opening ceremony, the Director-General of Agriculture, José Teixeira, stressed that one of Cabo Verde’s major challenges has to do with the mobilization of water for agriculture. Therefore, he said, they intend to make the best use of the Brazilian experience in the underground retention of rainwater.
Still according to José Teixeira, there is a pilot project that will take its first steps in the Santiago island, and can then be taken to the other islands, namely the shallow ones (Sal, Boa Vista and Maio) that even have better conditions for the implementation of this technique.
