Praia, Dec 11 (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic acknowledged Sunday that Cabo Verde has registered advances in rights, freedoms and guarantees, but the country must be more ambitious and be among the first in the world in this matter.
In his message to the International Human Rights Day, marked today, December 10, Jorge Carlos Fonseca admitted that the institutions that ensure the exercise of Human Rights exist, work and seek to improve its actions, in order to guarantee them, as well as to prevent and punish their disrespect, something Cabo Verdeans should be proud of.
“In our country the advances in rights, freedoms and guarantees are real (…). But we must be more and more ambitious in this area. We are in an area where we must and can reach and be among the first in the world. Here we can not put limits, “he said.
However, the President pointed out that despite the advances, the country faces “major problems” related to certain segments of society and to certain departments of the State, such as women victims of domestic violence, children victims of various ” abuses,” the prisoners, the mentally ill and the elderly.
As regards the departments of the State, Jorge Carlos Fonseca believes that it is necessary that certain police actions and less appropriate behavior in certain police stations be in conformity with the law and the principles of the Democratic Rule of Law.
